FROM THE PAINTING TO SPACE THROUGH VIRTUALITY
international digital workshop

Inspired by the painting in Volterra "The Deposition" by Rosso Fiorentino the students worked on abstract compositions, both in virtual and physical space. The final outputs were publicly exhibited on Volterra main square, bridging the conventional with non-convetional.

The rotational composition of the characters on the original painting and intentional neglect of central perspective were the key apects for the final installation. The spatial dynamics was expressed by motion of robotic arm, weaving a thread inbetween timber structure and painting with light. The perception of the installation can be twofold: a spatial interpretation of the Renaissance painting, and an interaction between thought of man and algorithm of machine.

In six day workshop students attended lectures on digital art and architecture and acquainted skills in Rhinoceros and Grashopper software. The tutoring sessions ranged from basic modeling to advanced iterative operations. Students had opportunity to use six-axes robotic arm and custom developed and 3d printed end effectors for design expression and production (LED painting, brigthness tracking and final design referencing). Moving back and forth beween virtual and real was the main accent of the workshop.

Ispirati dal dipinto di Rosso Fiorentino “La Deposizione” gli studenti hanno lavorato su composizioni astratte, prima nello spazio virtuale e poi fisico.

Il workshop ha avuto la durata di 6 giorni con 12 partecipanti tutti alla prima esperienza con strumenti di progettazione digitali. La prima parte del lavoro si è svolta in aula con lezioni introduttive al tema del digitale nell’arte e nell’architettura ed ai software Rhinoceros/Grasshopper.Sono state affrontate tematiche di base di Rhiceros e Grasshopper ma con cenni ad argomenti avanzati come mesh e iterazioni.

Tramite il plug-in kuka prc gli studenti hanno poi imparato a programmare un braccio robotico kuka agilus kr10 r900 sixx a sei assi, con l’utilizzo di Arduino e led sono state effettuate varie prove e composizioni di light painting. Sono stati poi messi a punto e stampati in 3d end effectors e supporti per il braccio. Durante l’esposizione del lavoro finale, in Piazza dei Priori, il robot ha teso un filo tra chiodi posti su assi di legno disposti secondo il modello digitale. La spazialità dinamica, l’assenza di una prospettiva centrale e matematicamente determinata sono stati elementi chiave per l’istallazione finale. La composizione di Rosso è quindi espressa come relazione tra il movimento del robot, i fili e le assi di legno. Diversi piani di percezione si sovrappongono e la Piazza diviene sfondo dell’interazione tra uomo algoritmo e macchina.

Graduate in History of Art and Architecture & Construction Engineering from University of Pisa. Participated on number of international architecture competitions. In 2015 collaborated with Sou-Fujimoto Architects, Tokyo.
Since 2016, is the co-founder of Zero-Order Architecture, a collective of young architects and designers, establishing a platform for collaborative research, competitions and design development, within commonly shared paradigms.

Slovakia

Graduated from Faculty of Architecture, Slovak University of Technology in 2014, in the department of environmental and experimental architecture. He studied as an exchange student of architecture in Madrid (ETSAM UPM). During his studies he took part in several national and international competitions and workshops. He continues in postgradual studies at the FA STU in the field of emergent and generative design approaches in architecture. He works as an architect, teacher and tutor of 3D graphic software. Co-organized and took part in several research projects from the rese arch LAB series, which are directly linked to his research of emergent fabrication.

Co-foudner of Zero-Order Architecture, working at MX3D, in robotic production. Architecture graduate (TU Delft, Hyperbody studio). After the bachelor's degree in Architecture and Urbanism (CTU in Prague) worked as assistant designer on alternative dwelling projects in Amsterdam, at Zondag CS Architecten. His graduation project (Informed Transformations, 2015) applies computation strategies and realtime transformative geometries to the renovation of Marconi Towers, Rotterdam. In 2014 exhibited in Madrid an interactive-performing environment (Hyperbody team project) called RoboZoo.
